What is MICR? MICR stands for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition, and is used to describe the special numbers and symbols you typically see at the bottom of checks, and the technology and processes to produce and analyze these characters. Click here for frequently asked questions, such as why you cannot find MICR ink for your inkjet printer. This site is dedicated to the promotion of MICR quality. MICR printing used to be a well controlled process in the hands of a small number of commercial printers. Desktop laser printers have enabled virtually anyone to print MICR-encoded financial documents, but many users and even vendors are unaware of the related standards, and how to ensure quality MICR. The result is a steep rise in rejected checks/cheques, requiring the banks to manually correct them. You can help make this site the most comprehensive and valuable stop for MICR information. Please let us know about any articles and resources that deal with MICR by clicking here. But keep in mind that the information must be 'vendor neutral'. While a minimal amount of vendor references will be tolerated (eg. the author, or a quote), the intent of this site is to be a reference and not a series of thinly disguised sales pitches. Announcing The MICR E-Mail Discussion List! While this list is operated primarily for those in the industry (eg. banks, check printers, etc.), anyone with a question to ask or contribution to make regarding MICR is welcome. All you have to do is join below and send a message introducing yourself and your interest in MICR to the list members.
